Prepositional Phrase

Prepositional Phrase: A phrase which is formed by combining a preposition with an object. is called  prepositional phrase.  Hence, a prepositional phrase consists of one preposition and the object. This object can be a noun, a gerund (a verb form ending in “-ing” that acts as a noun), or a clause. For example:

  • She arrived in time.
  • Is she really going out with that guy ?
  • My school is behind the market.
  • Jack and Jill climbed up the steep hill.
  • After the office we had snacks in the canteen.
  • For five years she has been waiting for the transfer.
  • NOTE: Some of the most common prepositions that begin prepositional phrases are to, of, about, at, before, after, by, behind, during, for, from, in, over, under, and with.

    A. Prepositional Phrases can be used to Modify Nouns (As adjective) : When a prepositional phrase acts upon a noun, we say it is behaving like an adjective because adjectives modify nouns. A prepositional phrase that behaves adjectivally is called, quite logically, an adjectival phrase. Example:

  • The dog in the middle is the cutest. ( in the middle answers the question of which dog , the writer thinks is the cutest)
  • I always buy my vegetables from the convenience store on Main Street . ( On Main Street gives us information about which store the writer is describing)
  • B. Prepositional Phrases can be used to Modify Verbs (As adverbs) : When a prepositional phrase acts upon a verb, we say it is behaving like an adverb because adverbs modify verbs. A prepositional phrase that behaves adverbially is called an adverbial phrase. Example:

  • To find the person who stole the diamonds, look behind you.
  • Meera drank her Butter scotch milk with passion.
